Christian Education Committee

Composition of the Committee — The Christian education committee shall consist of at least two elders, one of whom will serve as chairperson; the superintendent of the Sunday School; and any other individuals appointed by the chairperson. The pastor is an ex-officio member.

The Christian Education Year — The Christian education year begins on September 1 and ends on the following August 31.

Responsibilities of the Christian Education Committee — The responsibilities of the Christian education committee shall include the following tasks:

  1. In June of each year, recommend to the session a program of Christian education for the following year. This program shall encompass Sunday School, vacation Bible school, youth group, any special Bible studies, and other appropriate activities.
  2. Recommend to the session any necessary updates or changes in the program throughout the year.
  3. Report the congregation’s concerns or suggestions concerning Christian education.
  4. As appropriate, recommend to the session the names of Sunday school teachers who will serve for specific periods.
  5. Recommend to the session the names of replacement teachers for those who are unable to complete their assigned terms. These replacements will be approved by the session before they are contacted.
  6. Recommend individuals to serve as the Sunday school superintendent and assistant superintendent for three-year terms.
  7. Each July, recommend to the session the instructional materials that will be used by Sunday school classes beginning September 1.
  8. Recommend classroom space allocations for Christian education activities within the church.
  9. Recommend to the session the names of youth advisors to serve for three-year terms.
  10. Recommend to the session an individual to serve as librarian for a three-year term.
  11. In June and October, report to the session concerning the Christian education activities completed by the Sunday school, the pastor, and the youth groups. The report will include attendance and enrollment figures.
  12. In October, submit budget requests to support the Sunday school, the youth groups, the library, and any special study activities for the coming year.
  13. Plan and coordinate development activities for Sunday school teachers and others to help them in the performance of their duties.
  14. Make Sunday school teachers and others aware of training activities sponsored by the Mission Community and by Presbytery.
  15. Plan activities that will make all members of the congregation aware of Christian education programs and seek to get an increasing proportion of them involved in these activities.
  16. Make members of the congregation aware of Christian Education opportunities beyond the congregational level.
  17. Make recommendations to the session concerning the church calendar.
  18. Make a report about the Christian education program to the congregation at its annual meeting.
  19. Enlists members to represent the church on the planning committee of the Community Bible School.
